One of my kids in my day care has parents that are teachers. This means two weeks off here and two weeks off there. This can be very difficult on a one year old baby, they need and thrive on consistancy. I have found through the years that children thrive when they are in a routine, change that routine and your asking for trouble. I have tried to get the parents to bring their child to day care even though they have the time off but so far it’s a no go. They either feel guilty about dropping off when they have no work or they are flying off on an exciting vacation.
With this particular child, changing his routine is extremely difficult on him and me. It starts at drop off, hand the child over to me and he starts screaming. I give him breakfast and he stops long enough to eat and it starts right back up again. A special blanket, a soft toy from home, nothing works but time. Two weeks at the least sometimes longer until he calms down and gets back in to the routine.
After about 45 minutes to an hour we all need a break and off he goes to his portable crib in the nap room. As a day care provider for more than 20 years I know my limit and he seems to reach it daily for about two weeks. After the initial two weeks are up he’s a different little guy. Happy, sweet, and totally enjoyable, you would never know he was the same kid. I’m looking forward to next week, that’s the two week mark and I can’t wait to see my sweet, calm little guy once again.
